There was many beautiful girls in Naples in 16th century. But, more and more beautiful, with a particular fashion was Vittoria D' Avalos, courtesan at Burbon kingdom, one of the most flirted by young men of Naples elite.
Blond and perfect, with a with skin she has all men crazy for her. But, as usual, she fell in love of the only one that can't correspond her feeling.
He was blond too, beautiful like an Angel, and he has all the woman of Naples crazy for him too.
But in the heart of the young Diomede Carafa, was no place for human love, because another love lived inside him. Divine love
Infact he was the Archbishop of Mergellina Church, and every woman accepted this.
Except one. She has no peace in her hart.
So, one day, She came to meet Diomede, and inside her confession, declares her love and that she had no intention to resign herself.
How can he resist to a so beautiful temptation? Can he continue to keep in his heart a divine love when there is a so wonderful "Paradise" under his feet?
He engaged a duel between two loves that lives inside him.
But the divine love prevailed and, for thanking God to having saved from temptation, he ordered a picture to his friend (a famous painter, Leonardo da Pistoia).
Several days after the picture was on the main altar.
She, the devil, came to have his response (She asked to run away together), and when She looks at the picture, She, the devil, run away and didn't return back in all her life.

After Vittoria get married and died, several years after, nasty as a sorceress.

Naples, Mergellina, the area of tourist harbour, but also the sea-place when at evening leaves all the fishing battles. All the fishermen, young and old, and also tourist sailors, before taking the sea, give a look in direction of the red church a little bit elevated upon the street level.
They look at Mergellina Devil direction.
They know her unfortunate love story and considered a protecting devil that take care at their trouble on the sea. That's because all Mergellina fishermen love their personal devil.

In the Church, the portrait was impressing. She looks as a beautiful serpent and Diomede became, in the portrait, a wonderful St. Michele Arcangelo, that win his serpent.
She looks at St. Michael with..... "a certain regard".....

If you go to Mergellina, have a look at this portrait.
